[Third Film Prediction] Thor: Ragnarok [Analysis]

Hello!

Today it’s Thor, out on 3 November, and I’m writing up predictions based on the trailers!

*Warning:

Theories and predictions ahead. Spoilers for the MCU so far as well.

The post I wrote after release, about the film itself, is here!

So let me go through the poster that’s out at the moment and the two trailers.

Past entries in the Thor series are in the posts below.

I’m still writing up the second one lol

The synopsis

Thor (Chris Hemsworth) returns to Asgard after Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), and what is waiting for him is trouble caused by his brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston). Loki has taken the throne while posing as his vanished father Odin (Anthony Hopkins), and his hopelessly slapdash rule has brought about the resurrection of the imprisoned Hela (Cate Blanchett). Meeting Hela for the first time, Thor is flung out to the savage planet Sakaar. Dragged before the charming and utterly ruthless ruler the Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum) by the hard-drinking warrior Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Thor has his hair cut off, Mjolnir taken from him, and is made a fighter. And then who should appear but Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), now the strongest fighter on Sakaar…

Knew it lol

As I wrote in the Doctor Strange post, I couldn’t work out how it had already come out that Loki was the one in disguise — so this is what that was about lol

Unleashing Death of all things — what on earth is he doing lol

Valkyrie’s comics profile goes like this.

  • [Hero] Real name: Brunnhilde / Samantha Parrington. God / female / Asgardian
  • Abilities: stronger than the average Asgardian god. Immeasurable physical strength, speed and stamina, and a warrior of long experience. She can also sense when a person is about to die.
  • Teams: the Avengers, the Defenders, the Avengers Initiative, the Secret Avengers, and others
  • The strongest woman warrior in Asgard, riding the winged horse Aragorn and wielding the enchanted sword Dragonfang.
  • After a fight with the witch Enchantress that ran for centuries, she came to modern-day Earth.
  • A master of the thrown spear. Dragonfang, the sword that can never be broken, is said to have been made from a dragon’s tooth.
  • She travels on the winged horse Aragorn. The horse was a gift from the Black Knight.
  • In the aftermath of Fear Itself she fought on alone against every hero on Earth who opposed her, in order to seal away the eight hammers left on the surface.
  • In Avengers vs. X-Men she was a member of the anti-Phoenix force, with Thor as its leader.
  • More recently she formed the all-woman hero team the Fearless Defenders. She has the soul of Annabelle, the archaeologist member who died, possessing her own body.

Hmm~~~, strong.

Going by the trailers and so on, Valkyrie seems to be a mercenary sort of figure in the Grandmaster’s service.

Next up, the Grandmaster.

http://marvel-avengers.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/grandmaster-marvel.jpg

He’s one of the Cosmic Beings, a life form who loves games.

Here he seems to be running an arena.

In the comics he isn’t on good terms with the Collector, the fellow Cosmic Being who turned up in Guardians of the Galaxy. If anything the impression is that he bullies the Collector lol

He’s a character who kicks up a fuss a lot.

The Cosmic Beings and the Collector are covered in the post below.

The poster

Green and a reddish orange, fusing Hulk’s and Thor’s signature colours — a great design!!

The Warriors Three, who’ve been around up to now, look like they won’t get much to do this time either lol

Fun composition.

The word is that this one is being made as a 90-minute comedy, so that quality does come through lol

Trailer 1

Mjolnir, shattered to pieces.

In the comics there’s a rule that without Mjolnir Thor goes as weak as a human, but the MCU doesn’t have that rule, so nothing to worry about lol

Some people predict that the last Infinity Stone is Mjolnir, but going by the trailer that looks like it isn’t it.

And his hair is long, so this sits earlier in the timeline.

The MCU has had the Kree and all sorts, but the aliens in this one have that lived-in, grubby Star Wars feel lol

Hulk took a jet and disappeared off somewhere in Avengers: Age of Ultron, but it seems he got himself captured by the Grandmaster.

In Hulk form his intelligence is supposed to drop until he can’t even hold a conversation, and yet there he was talking.

Getting closer to the comics version.

This red tornado looks seriously bad news.

They head for it in that round jet.

This red thing must be one of the film’s threats.

Hela is beautiful!

And each of these shots was in slow motion and gorgeous!

Wiping out a whole nation single-handed — incredible.

What are these fireworks, I wonder.

Loki, locked up for some reason lol

The two of them blasting away with guns is very Men in Black.

Look closely and the enemies here are wearing armour.

Samurai seem to be the motif.

Japan apparently shows up in Avengers 4 as well. Fan service lol

A wolf, so that’ll be Fenrir.

In Norse myth he is said to face Odin and swallow him whole.

In Norse myth he’s Loki’s son, incidentally.

Wonder how it works in the MCU.

That’s the Grandmaster.

He seems like a gentler character than the comics version.

The pair beside him are Valkyrie and Skurge — or so I thought, and then the one on the left isn’t Skurge lol

Skurge and Valkyrie are both Asgardians and both apparently very strong.

Look closely and this armour belongs to Asgardian soldiers.

Hela is Death, the god of death, so this must be one of her abilities.

In the comics she constantly kicks up trouble trying to kill powerful figures like Thor and turn them into her servants.

Heimdall escaped Hela’s attack and seems to be organising something like a resistance??

Loki gets shot down in this scene and it made me laugh lol

Thor is there in the background.

The question is where this is coming from and where it’s heading.

Thor finally awakens!!

Going by the hair length this is a late scene, presumably?

Whether he can physically beat Hela looks doubtful, but I’m hopeful.

This is the enemy called Surtur.

A fire giant standing over 300 metres tall. He existed before Odin and the rest of the Asgardian gods, and with his evil cunning and enormous power he became a threat to Asgard.
He was imprisoned in the Earth’s core by Odin, but has been let loose several times.
The first time, Loki freed him to bring disaster to Earth, and he flew about as a ball of fire until he shot out of the atmosphere and was trapped on an asteroid in another galaxy.
The being who killed Odin.

Surtur — What Divine Guys!! A roundup of Thor villains, NAVER Matome

In comics terms he’s imprisoned on Earth, presumably.

Trailer 2

Going by the hair length, an early scene.

Maybe this is after finding out Loki was the one in disguise, coming down to Earth to search?

Shame that Strange doesn’t look like he turns up at the arena or anywhere like that.

The one behind on the right doesn’t appear to be an Asgardian soldier.

The one behind on the left looks like a civilian, so Loki seems to be on the protecting side.

Glad he’s on our side, more or less lol

This bit is hugely important!!!!

Look at the background!!!!! That’s New York!!!!!!

And here too!!!!

Putting all of that together, let me predict how it plays out.

Predictions

How this film plays out

Thor returns to Asgard.

Odin turns out to be Loki.

Hela is set loose around the same time.

Loki and Thor head back to Earth for a bit and ask Strange for help.

Hela attacks.

Thor and Loki return to Asgard

Loki is shot down. Thor loses too and is thrown into prison on Sakaar. Becomes a gladiator.

Reunion with Hulk.

Hela’s scheming sets off the red tornado.

Loki, who ought to be on Earth, has been captured as well.

Loki, Valkyrie, Hulk and Thor wreck the Grandmaster’s arena.

The four of them head for Asgard.

Hela vs Thor

Thor awakens

Surtur is released.

Surtur is beaten by Hulk and Thor.

But something happens as they beat him and Thor gets flung out into space.

The reason being that Thor was drifting through space in the Infinity War trailer.

Hela gives up for now and escapes.

Peace comes to Asgard and to space, and the story ends.

Something like that, I reckon.

The thing is that the trailers tell us absolutely nothing about Odin.

And on top of that, how Thor even knows about Strange is a real curiosity.

Also, Sam Neill is in it with his role unannounced.

He’s a famous name, so it must be a big part.

Odin’s form on Earth, or something along those lines?

So curious.

Also, the Infinity War poster has been released.

This poster confirms that Loki survives!! lol

What comes next

The Enchantress

She’s Valkyrie’s rival — will she turn up later on?

They’ve gone to the trouble of putting Valkyrie in, so I’d love them to bring her in too.

Hopes are on Phase 4.

https://matome.naver.jp/odai/2140965918571277901/2140974947557297103

Her real name is Amora.

Abilities: Amora’s kiss turns any man into a slave. Deep knowledge of magic, great physical strength, a long life, and the power of a goddess. One of Asgard’s most formidable sorcerers, skilled in magic that charms and controls other people.

Valkyrie’s nemesis. The feud between the two women has run for several centuries.

Hela and Thanos

Thanos is collecting the Infinity Stones so he can kill a great many living beings for Death.

Death and Hela are different people, but putting both of them in the films would probably get confusing, so they might just hand Death’s position over to Hela.

Which means Death is surely going to appear in Infinity War too.

And Hela, who will presumably lose to Thor and company in this film — what does she do from here, I wonder.
