Today I thought I’d review Get Out, the hugely talked-about film that has just turned up on rental.

Chris, an African-American photographer living in New York, is invited one weekend to the family home of his white girlfriend Rose. His slight unease is met instead with a welcome so warm it borders on excessive, and yet the presence of Black servants leaves him oddly unsettled. That night he witnesses the groundskeeper tearing across the garden at full speed and the housekeeper staring intently at her own reflection in the window glass, and Chris is shaken. The next day a crowd of friends gathers for a party honouring Rose’s late grandfather, but for some reason every one of them is white…

The film has been very highly rated.
First there is the horror and psychological thriller side of it.
The other is the question of racism.
With President Obama’s election, it is said that racism against Black people vanished.
But
this film is also said to be one that dragged out the prejudice still buried deep inside liberal white people.
Watching the trailer and so on I assumed it would be some extreme KKK-style massacre of Black people, but what it depicts is far more psychological terror, and it wasn’t the usual blood-drenched psycho movie at all.
Also, I’ll skip the details here, but I thought it was amazing how much setup this film plants.

Anyone who hasn’t seen the film yet had probably better hold off on reading it.
I think the prejudice buried deep down is portrayed extremely well too.
For instance, when an older white person is talking with a Black person, a lot of those older people bring up successful Black people.
They are good citizens with no sense of prejudice at all, and yet apparently they end up doing that sort of thing.
The back half of the film was great too!!!
A shocking truth comes to light, and it’s fairly sci-fi, or something along those lines lol
The feeling of the mystery unravelling piece by piece was good.
Also, the protagonist is capable!
With thriller films there are always moments where you want to yell at the characters, “surely you’d normally do this” — but here every one of them is rational and acts in ways that make sense, so no frustration built up.
Also, Daniel Kaluuya, who played the protagonist Chris Washington, played roles like the best friend of the lead in Black Panther.
It was a wonderful film that fused psychological thriller, horror, suspense and social issues beautifully.
