[Based on a True Story lol] No Spoilers: Army of One [Thoughts & Review]

Hello!

Today I’m reviewing this wild-looking one lol

Synopsis

Gary, a patriotic middle-aged American, is growing angrier and angrier that the government still hasn’t managed to find Osama bin Laden, the man held to be the mastermind behind the September 11 attacks.

Then one day, in the middle of dialysis, he receives a sudden revelation from God — “capture bin Laden” — and resolves to catch him with his own hands.

Gary procures his own weapon, a Japanese sword, and a yacht to travel on, and heads for Pakistan alone.

But from there, things take a turn nobody saw coming…

Thoughts & Review

Who bin Laden was

Osama bin Laden was the spiritual leader of al-Qaeda, the group behind 9/11.

The attacks shocked the entire world. They also bred prejudice against Islam, and dramatically changed the way terrorism is seen.

He himself was executed by the US military in 2011.

Is Gary unhinged?

That’s Gary Faulkner.

There’s some dramatisation in the film, but it’s pretty much a true story lol

And the shifty quality Nicolas Cage brings to the role matches it exquisitely lol

Before watching, I’d assumed Gary must be a seriously unhinged guy.

But in fact, while there may have been a bit of delusion from the diabetes in the mix, his loyalty to America and that hero’s temperament — the conviction that he has to be the one to sort this out — were hugely appealing.

Maybe that’s why he has so many friends in the film. Some people call him odd, but the impression I got is that nobody speaks badly of him lol

The comic touch made it fun, but I’d have liked even more comedy in it… lol

Still, the mountain ranges of the Islamic world are gorgeous, and the way life there is captured felt fresh and interesting too.
