[Analysis & Review] Deadpool 2 [Impressions & Trivia]

Hello!!!

Went to see it first thing on opening morning! lol

So — cameos, Easter eggs, all of it, here we go.

http://collider.com/deadpool-2-poster-logan/

This article also draws on the Japanese cinema programme

X-Force !!

Thoughts on the story

So, so much fun!!

Opening the film with a gag about the death of Logan (Wolverine) — did not see that coming lol

Cable says the time-travel device only has two charges, there and back, so I assumed the second one would go on saving Vanessa. What it actually gets used for is far more moving than that. Genuinely surprised me lol

Then the X-Men cameos, X-Force being wiped out lol, Juggernaut turning up — the film never runs out of material. Completely satisfied!!

The perfect straight-down-the-line sequel!!

“Take On Me” playing over the film gives it extra depth too.

Before release I looked at this poster and thought, what on earth is this? lol After seeing the film you realise it’s a brilliant summary of the whole thing.

An R-rated family movie. Wade becomes a proper hero. X-Force gets formed. I’ll say it as many times as it takes — the best.

About the opening

The opening alone had me howling lol

Watch the clip above and it’s obvious — it’s a parody of the opening titles of the James Bond film Spectre lol

Spectre won the Academy Award for Best Original Song!

About the final scene

A happy ending forced into place by rewriting time!!!

What a trash script (compliment)

Where does the version of you already sitting in that moment go when you time travel? What about the grandfather paradox? There’s so much to poke at, and that’s part of the charm lol

Thanks to this final scene:

  1. Vanessa is stopped from dying
  2. Peter survives
  3. Ryan Reynolds is stopped from appearing in Green Lantern
  4. The Deadpool from X-Men Origins: Wolverine gets killed

Every one of those is far too important!!! lol

This section alone makes the film worth the ticket!

Let’s take them one at a time.

On 1

And so Vanessa doesn’t have to die lol

Good, good.

Hoping the third film gives Wade and her a kid!

On 2

Right arm dissolved by Zeitgeist’s acid, and then, almost certainly, dear sweet Peter dies….

Wade’s rewrite of time prevents it!

On 3

https://www.pinterest.jp/pin/574983077397656081/?lp=true

Ryan Reynolds, who plays Wade, starred in Green Lantern, released back in 2011!

That film bombed, and just like the first movie, the sequel keeps mining it for jokes lol

Deadpool putting a bullet through the head of a Ryan Reynolds who is delighted to have “finally landed a big one” — the hardest I laughed all film.

On 4

Deadpool had already appeared in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, released in 2009. And he was played by the very same Ryan Reynolds!

But that Deadpool looked nothing like the comics, as the image above shows. The mouthiest character in Marvel had his mouth sewn shut. He does get a few lines, but none of it matched the character, and the whole thing turned into a chapter everyone would rather forget lol

And this film goes straight at it, kills off that embarrassing Deadpool, and gives us the dream scene of this Deadpool squaring up to Wolverine!!

The background to all four of these rewrites is covered in detail here!!

https://theriver.jp/dp2-post-credit/

About the X-Men

Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters from the X-Men films turns up too!! lol

The X-Men members who got cut from the first film for budget reasons appear for a split second! lol

There’s even a guy with wings in the top right of that image!

Pure pantomime — “Wade, behind you!! Behind you!!” I lost it lol

Deadpool sits in a wheelchair and straps a device to his head!

That gear belongs to Professor X, the man who built the X-Men and runs the school lol

He also says he can smell Patrick Stewart — that’s the actor who played Professor X lol

The serious material

The film is mostly comedy, but there is some serious material buried in it worth digging into.

That would be the mutant care home, “Broadstone House, Essex School for Children”!

The headmaster there is played by Eddie Marsan. A thoroughly sleazy man with thoroughly antiquated views, and his final moment is very funny lol

The word Essex is the key here.

The final scene of X-Men: Apocalypse also has a shot of an outfit called Essex Corp collecting Wolverine’s blood samples.

Essex is the real name of the villain Mister Sinister — Nathaniel Essex!

http://kenzau.blog.fc2.com/blog-entry-24.html

Mister Sinister’s background in the comics:

His abilities include manipulating others at the molecular level, releasing telekinetic energy, healing his own body, a high-level intellect, superhuman durability and immense strength. Apocalypse saw his talent, took him on as a disciple and gave him an immortal body, and so he became Mr. Sinister. He was later driven by his own desire to rule the world, broke with Apocalypse, and made it his life’s goal to create the ultimate mutant, one capable of defeating Apocalypse.

For a fuller explanation this site is the one to read.

Click!!

The programme suggested Essex may just have been dropped in loosely, in keeping with the film’s tone. Personally I still think it’s a deliberate hint that Mister Sinister will end up deeply involved with the X-Men, and eventually with the MCU.

Will it ever join the MCU?

To get this out of the way first. Deadpool comes from the same Marvel comics publisher as Iron Man, but the live-action films do not share a universe. The film rights to Deadpool belong to 20th Century Fox, Disney owns the MCU, and grown-up business reasons keep the two apart.

But! 20th Century Fox, who make Deadpool, were recently bought by Disney, who make the MCU.

My guess is that Deadpool 2 was more or less finished by the time the deal closed, so there was no way to hook it into the MCU.

Ryan Reynolds and the rest have said the same, and I’d love to see Deadpool sharing the screen with Spider-Man and company. Please make it happen.

The Japanese dub beat the subtitles

The Japanese dub beat the subtitles

Here’s what that means. Apparently there was talk of getting Chris Evans, who plays Captain America, to cameo in the X-Force auditions! It turned out to be too much of an ask and never happened.

However!!

The Japanese voice cast for the doomed X-Force members is made up of the actors who dub Thor, Captain America, Black Panther and Doctor Strange in the MCU!! lol

Honestly, the dub wins this joke lol

Do You Wanna Build a Snowman?

The line about Frozen having ripped its song off from Yentl absolutely destroyed me lol

Those two songs… hmm, no comment lol

Whether they really sound alike is beside the point. It’s Wade’s completely straight face while he says it that I love lol

And near the end, as Wade is dying, he sings “Do You Wanna Build a Snowman?” instead of “Papa, Can You Hear Me?”. It lands as: ah, he really is going to die. A sad, beautifully staged moment, and to me an important joke.

Every joke I can remember (vampires included)

Might as well write down the rest of my favourite jokes, as far as I can remember lol

  1. The man who killed John Wick’s dog — because this film and John Wick were both directed by David Leitch
  2. Wade calling Domino Black Widow, the MCU’s female spy
  3. Wade calling Dopinder, who is Indian, Brown Panther
  4. Black Tom introduces himself, and Wade fires straight back with White Wade
  5. Wade telling Cable off for being racist

Then there’s the Tom Cruise vampire gag.

https://middle-edge.jp/articles/07gpY

That one comes from Interview with the Vampire.

That film also stars Kirsten Dunst, best known as the heroine of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man.

About the characters

Character descriptions quoted from Wikipedia.

Wade Wilson / Deadpool

Played by Ryan Reynolds. Japanese dub: Yasuyuki Kase

A former special forces operative who scraped a living as a mercenary and fixer in New York, and a mutant with an extraordinary, near-immortal healing factor. In the first film he defeated Ajax, the man who turned him into a mutant, and rescued his kidnapped girlfriend Vanessa. Here he is living with Vanessa again and playing at being a hero as Deadpool. As in the first film he narrates the story, and at various points he ignores the fourth wall to speak to the audience and even take control of the film’s own staging.
— Wikipedia

His relationship with Colossus, the change that losing Vanessa puts him through, the fact that the change is expressed as a dive into water — this film digs into him far deeper than anything before. Plus his awkward, clumsy feelings towards Firefist, and, and… too much to fit in lol

The bit where his lower half grows back child-sized felt properly taboo and was wild (no vocabulary left)

Then there’s the very dark joke about mutants being a stand-in for the racism Black Americans faced in the 1960s, told straight to a Black character. And insisting that killing Black Tom counts as racism, and accusing Cable of judging by skin colour. Completely unhinged lol

In the comics the X-Force Deadpool is grey, like this.

Fans genuinely wondered whether he would change into that costume. Nobody guessed the colour would come from Firefist scorching the suit lol

A story that made me love this character even more than the first one did.

Cable

Played by Josh Brolin. Japanese dub: Akio Otsuka

A warrior from the future, half of his body turned cyborg. He handles all kinds of high-tech weaponry, and his bionic arm houses a powerful shield generator. He is an excellent hand-to-hand fighter as well. He is hunting the mutant boy Russell, which puts him at odds with Deadpool, who is trying to protect him.
— Wikipedia

His background in the comics:

Overview

The biological son of Cyclops, leader of the X-Men. His mother is Madelyne Pryor, a clone of Jean Grey. A warrior who combines the powerful mutant abilities inherited from his parents with combat and survival skills earned through training.

Powers

Powerful telekinesis and telepathy. Because he uses that psychic power to hold back the techno-organic virus described below, spending it on anything else lets the virus spread (the virus is cured later). Most of the time he fights with trained technique and firearms instead. Once the virus is cured he wears a weaponised prosthetic on his left arm. He has the combat ability and survival skills of a first-class mercenary.
studentx wiki

Yes. Cable is the son of Cyclops and Jean!!

The film never goes near it and leaves his parents unnamed, but I really want it to be true.

In the comics there’s also a version where Cable’s left eye comes from inheriting his father Cyclops’ power.

Coming back from the future for his murdered wife and child is strong motivation. And burning his last time-travel charge on Deadpool at the end, giving up ever seeing them again, is heartbreaking.

Loyal to a fault, and the straight man to Deadpool’s clowning, exactly like the comics. Want far more of this double act!!

A metal arm? Isn’t that a bit dated?? What is this, the Winter Soldier!

Laughed so hard lol

And then

Thanos over here acting tough!!

As everybody already knows, that’s a joke about Josh, who plays Cable, also playing Thanos in Infinity War.

Surprising that it only came up about once.

The man going on about toilet paper

Used this site as a reference.

https://theriver.jp/dp2-cameos/

Matt Damon was in there as a cameo too lol Didn’t spot him at all until I read the article above…

He’s apparently the one holding forth about toilet paper lol He cameoed in Thor: Ragnarok as well, so I’d love to see him properly join the MCU.

Juggernaut

https://www.cbr.com/deadpool-2-juggernaut-tears-apart-deadpool/

Juggernaut shows up too!!

The character actually appeared in X-Men: The Last Stand back in 2006!

A different Juggernaut from this one, mind.

His background in the comics:

Powers

His power comes from the gem of the demon Cyttorak. He is closely tied to the X-Men but is not a mutant. Because the gem draws its power from an evil heart, Juggernaut grows weaker the more he leans towards the heroic side. Known as “the Unstoppable”, his ability is simple and unmatched: he destroys and breaks through anything. The raw strength the gem gives him rivals the Hulk’s. His near-invulnerable toughness and recovery made even Onslaught say he was hard to kill. His distinctive armour also protects him from telepathy and other psychic attacks.

Overview

Cain Marko, stepbrother of Charles Xavier, better known as Professor X. Cain’s father Kurt Marko and Charles’ mother Sharon remarried, each bringing a child. Cain was jealous of a stepbrother who was good at both schoolwork and sport, and bullied him. During the Korean War he found the red gem of the demon Cyttorak and gained his power. The cave collapsed and buried him alive at that moment, so Charles believed he had died. He then reappeared in front of Charles after the X-Men were formed, out for revenge. Driven by jealousy and vengeance towards Charles, he also carries a deep loneliness, and called his fellow villain Black Tom Cassidy his only friend.
studentx wiki

What Deadpool 2 tells us is that he really is Professor X’s stepbrother, and that he is very likely not a mutant, since he wasn’t fitted with a power-suppressing collar in prison. A remarkably faithful adaptation of the comics character.

Here he has the strongest body going and nothing gets through it! I assumed he’d betray Firefist for freeing him, so it was a real surprise how cooperative he stayed.

Dumped in a pool and electrocuted, I wondered what would become of him — and then there’s a shot of him climbing back out at the end!

Juggernaut was played by Ryan Reynolds, the man who plays Deadpool!! Why two roles? Not enough budget lol

https://theriver.jp/dp2-ryan-another/

Black Tom

Played by Jack Kesy

https://eiga.com/person/303424/

Black Tom’s background in the comics:

His mutant ability is projecting explosive energy. Characteristically he channels it through a traditional wooden staff. He later awakens a new mutant power through a secondary mutation and gains the ability to control plants.

Here he’s in prison, pierced all over, and then, not that he had any say in it, he gets killed by Juggernaut during the transfer lol

Anyone who knows the comics must have assumed he and Juggernaut would be putting Deadpool through hell together lol

Vanessa

Played by Morena Baccarin. Japanese dub: Marika Hayashi

Wade’s girlfriend, a former stripper. In the first film she accepted Wade even after the price of his mutant abilities left his whole body looking burned.
— Wikipedia

That conversation with Vanessa in what looks like the afterlife was lovely…

Russell Collins / Firefist

Played by Julian Dennison. Japanese dub: Junko Minagawa

A boy mutant with the ability to throw flames. He is arrested after using his power to rampage outside the children’s home where he lives, and is locked up alongside Wade in the mutant prison known as the Ice Box.
— Wikipedia

In the future he grows into an absolutely vicious mutant.

But this film stops that happening. Happy ending! Good, good!

Sticking a sharpened pen up the “prison wallet” though — please, no lol

Domino

Played by Zazie Beetz. Japanese dub: Mayumi Sako

Her background in the comics:

A female fighter who answers Wade and Weasel’s recruitment drive and becomes a member of X-Force. A mutant whose special ability is manipulating luck, which pays off to the maximum in combat.
— Wikipedia

Domino, created by Rob Liefeld, with a power so plain it could never look good on screen!

In this film cars go flying past in slow motion and a bus bursts straight through a wall. Extremely plain power, clearly lol

Want her back for the third one!

Weasel

Played by T.J. Miller. Japanese dub: Setsuji Sato

The owner of Sister Margaret’s, the bar where Wade and the other mercenaries go looking for work, and Wade’s best friend. At Wade’s request he runs the recruitment drive for X-Force.
— Wikipedia

The actor everyone is talking about right now thanks to the hit show Silicon Valley!

His jokes are the best!!

Blind Al

Played by Leslie Uggams. Japanese dub: Miru Ichiyanagi

A blind old woman and Wade’s roommate. She uses cocaine regularly, and Wade’s stash is kept at her place too.
— Wikipedia

She’s pointing the gun the wrong way!! lol

Dopinder

Played by Karan Soni. Japanese dub: Ryuichi Kagehira

An Indian taxi driver. Ever since meeting Wade in the first film he has been happy to help, and after begging to be allowed to do hero work himself he starts out as a dogsbody under Weasel.
— Wikipedia

A psychopath of an Indian cab driver

Firefist didn’t fall to the dark side, so I can’t shake the feeling this is the character who eventually will lol

Colossus

Voiced by Stefan Kapičić. Japanese dub: Masashi Kimura

A mutant and a member of the mutant hero team the X-Men. He has a body of steel and astonishing strength. He has been trying to recruit Wade into the X-Men for some time, and in this film he finally succeeds.
— Wikipedia

The heroine of this film

He grumbles about Wade and then keeps looking out for him anyway. Such a good guy!

Deeply devout, and yet he drops an F-bomb for Wade’s sake. Genuinely moving lol

Negasonic Teenage Warhead

Played by Brianna Hildebrand. Japanese dub: Yu Shimamura

A female mutant of the mutant hero team the X-Men. She can release atomic energy from her body and use it to attack. In this film she is usually acting alongside her girlfriend Yukio.
— Wikipedia

An X-Men trainee in the first film, a full member here!

Never expected her to pick up a girlfriend called Yukio…

Yukio

Played by Shioli Kutsuna

A female mutant of the mutant hero team the X-Men. She can generate an electric charge and attacks by running current through a chain. She and Negasonic are girlfriends.
— Wikipedia

Honestly, unbelievably cute lol

That smile is the best.

The X-Men have plenty of Japanese characters — Hisako Ichiki, for instance, who wears something like psychic armour — but Yukio looks like a character original to the films.

About X-Force

Their background in the comics:

Overview

Originally the New Mutants, the team Professor X put together to train young mutants, which Cable then reorganised into a fighting unit. The roster turns over constantly, and every reorganisation swaps the members out so completely that it is effectively a different team under the same name. The one constant is that they take on missions dangerous enough to cost lives, and they will kill if they have to. A mutant strike team.
studentx wiki

X-Force!!

The bit where they decide MEN is discriminatory so they’ll go with this name instead is the most meta and the funniest thing in the film!! lol

Bedlam

Played by Terry Crews. Japanese dub: Kenta Miyake

A mutant who answers Wade and Weasel’s recruitment drive and becomes an X-Force member. He has the ability to control electromagnetic waves.
— Wikipedia

Straight into a vehicle window. Dead…

Shatterstar

Played by Lewis Tan. Japanese dub: Yuichi Nakamura

A mutant who answers Wade and Weasel’s recruitment drive and becomes an X-Force member. He claims to be an alien.
— Wikipedia

Killed by a helicopter rotor…

His blood was green, so… was he actually an alien??? lol

Zeitgeist

Played by Bill Skarsgård. Japanese dub: Makoto Tamura

A mutant who answers Wade and Weasel’s recruitment drive and becomes an X-Force member. His power is spitting a highly acidic slime.
— Wikipedia

Dragged into a rubbish truck. Dead…

Vanisher

A mutant who answers Wade and Weasel’s recruitment drive and becomes an X-Force member. His power is total invisibility, but he stays invisible from start to finish and never makes a sound, so there is no way to tell whether he is even there.
— Wikipedia

Vanisher was played by Brad Pitt!!!

An absurdly starry cameo!!! lol

Peter

Played by Rob Delaney. Japanese dub: Satoshi Mikami

An ordinary man who answers Wade and Weasel’s recruitment drive and becomes an X-Force member. He joined because he wanted a job.
— Wikipedia

Peter, the one everybody had their eye on from the trailers! lol

Losing his arm to the acid and dying was a real shock, so I was delighted he came back in the final scene.

The first film is here ↓
