Today it’s What If…? episode 3, which dropped on Wednesday 25 August — the points worth flagging, the theories, and predictions for where all of this goes next.

Quick notes on everything that caught my eye on the first watch, the Easter eggs, and the theories after that.

A new Incredible Hulk

Edward Norton was the star of The Incredible Hulk, but it seems he fell out with the production, and the role of Hulk was switched over to Mark Ruffalo.

So this week turned out to be a fairly momentous episode, with Mark Ruffalo acting out the events of The Incredible Hulk!

The Avengers is an idea

At the end of episode 3 the Earth ends up invaded by Loki.

And then Nick Fury’s line after that — “the Avengers isn’t a team, it’s an idea. Something that becomes hope for people” — was electrifying.

Looks like there’s plenty to expect from the Avengers in Phase 4 and beyond

How the What If…? episodes connect

The Rogers version of Captain America turns up this week, so episode 3 isn’t in the same universe as episode 1. Going by that, episode 2 might be a different universe as well.

However, as the trailer shows, going by the colours at the neck there’s also a scene where the T’Challa version of Star-Lord and companions who haven’t appeared yet all gather in one place, so there’s every chance the universes seen so far come back later.

And there’s every possibility they never do anything with the ending of episode 2, but it’d be great to see where that goes.
