[Episode VIII Predictions #2] Star Wars: The Last Jedi [Star Wars Analysis]

Hello!!

This time round I thought I’d have a go at some analysis and predictions about the newly released second trailer for Star Wars Episode VIII.

The film is out!!!

The post about the film itself, written after release, is here

I’ve done predictions for the earlier trailer as well, so please have a look at that post too

Here’s the newly released trailer!

Where is this, I wonder.

Going by the back of him, that’s Kylo Ren, I think. It has to be a building on the Empire’s side. Looks like a factory of some kind, but that’s as far as I can get.

It might be the planet or the building where Kylo Ren and Rey are talking near the end of this trailer.

This bit, oh come on! Any Star Wars fan clocks it in a second — the Battle of Hoth from Episode V.

Loads of walkers. Anyone who saw Rogue One will know — the sheer suppressive power of a walker, the impact of it, is off the scale.

The second image is stormtroopers in cold-weather gear.

But going by the trailer there doesn’t seem to be anywhere especially cold, so why are they wearing that? And is the one out in front Kylo Ren?

Overall it feels like the whole thing follows the shape of Episode V, but expectations will surely be subverted in the best way all the same.

This scene is surely the salt planet that turned up in trailer 1.

The plan against all those walkers must be to throw up red smoke like in the image above and bring them down that way.

The scene where Kylo Ren gets his new lightsaber.

His lightsaber in Episode VII was shaped like a cross, and the reason for that shape, apparently, is that it’s still unfinished — it vents an enormous amount of energy out of the sides to keep itself regulated.

But this time it looks like he’s deliberately keeping the side vents anyway. And fair enough, a crossguard would surely make fighting easier.

That red background is lovely. Staging you’ve never had in Star Wars before, and it really hints at a Sith story.

And the lightsaber colour has that slightly washed-out original-trilogy feel. Irresistible.

The prosthetic hand is built plainly, maybe because that makes it easier to maintain.

And this is the big moment where the blue lightsaber comes back into Luke’s hand after several decades.

Something that was sleeping has awakened

Must be Rey’s Force awakening in Episode VII. But what is the something?

Going by the intonation, something evil, maybe?

There are all sorts of theories about this tree, and the strongest is that it’s the significant item known as the Force tree.

Apparently it’s a tree that can sense the Force.

The tree’s history is written up in detail in the comics. Put simply, there were two of them, one owned by the mother of Poe, the ace pilot introduced in Episode VII, and one owned by Luke.

The other theory going around is that it’s the ruins of a sacred site from the old days of the Jedi Order

Luke (Mark Hamill), startled.

So it does look like Rey and Luke are meeting for the first time.

Which is why the person who left Rey on that planet isn’t Luke, I reckon.

Who on earth was it…

The Trickster (Mark Hamill) | The Flash Wiki | FANDOM powered by Wikia

Say Mark Hamill and most people think Luke, but lately for me it’s the Trickster in the show The Flash. He’s also done the voice of the Joker in the animated version — a man with plenty of villain roles.

The Flash is genuinely great, so it comes recommended.

I know the ultimate power

Once I did not fear it

Now that has changed

This is probably about the dark side. In Episodes IV, V and VI he was a young man who stood up to it bravely, but a lot has presumably happened since, and he must be starting to feel very strongly how dangerous the dark side is.

The flashback shows footage of the place where the next generation of Jedi were being trained, the one Kylo Ren destroyed.

Kylo Ren appears. Looks like he’s repairing some kind of scar with carbon.

Like his grandfather Anakin Skywalker, he must be an ace pilot too.

The fighter’s shape is a little different from the standard one, more stylish, and it looks fast.

The shot of him firing while spinning is unbelievably cool.

Tearing through fleet after fleet — you really do think, yes, that came straight from grandad.

This is Carrie Fisher, who passed away not long ago.

Apparently the script was rewritten because of her death.

She’s surely going to be written out.

At first glance it looks like Kylo Ren destroys the ship Princess Leia is on and that’s the end of it, but look closely and he’s clearly hesitating, so maybe she doesn’t die here and something else happens afterwards.

Whether Kylo Ren really does fall to the dark side here, or goes over to the light side — unmissable.

Singin’ in the Rain — Wikipedia

For what it’s worth, Carrie Fisher also guest-starred in the show The Big Bang Theory, and she was the daughter of the leading lady of Singin’ in the Rain — an actress I’ve long felt close to, and this is a real loss.

My condolences.

This cute white creature with the perfectly round eyes is called a porg, a mascot that turns up from Episode VIII — or so it seems?

Poe. His mother was someone close to Luke, and may have grown up alongside the Force tree. Will he become a Jedi? No idea.

He’ll surely deliver again the way a second Han Solo would.

Finn versus Captain Phasma, one on one.

Captain Phasma is a woman, you know (fairly well known, that one?).

Later on in this trailer there’s actually a scene with Finn inside the First Order, so he’s probably infiltrating, gets found out, and that’s how the two of them end up duelling.

It isn’t lightsaber versus lightsaber, and yet the force and the style of it are enormous. Both of them look so good.

Luke’s final moments…???

A creature from the salt planet.

What it’s turning to look at must be a First Order horde.

On the timeline, is this while they’re with the fleet, or before or after…

You are the one who will fulfil that destiny

Snoke himself shows up.

Size-wise he’s about the same as an ordinary person after all lol

In the shot where Rey is floating you can see yellow clothing in the background, so the one lifting her must be Snoke.

As I wrote in the previous post, I still think Snoke might well be Darth Plagueis.

I reckon that line about being the one who will fulfil that destiny is connected to the ultimate power Luke talked about.

Rey is the key.

Master both the light side and the dark side and something happens — that sort of thing?

What the Jedi actually are,

what the Skywalker family actually is,

and what on earth the Force is…

Kylo Ren is reaching a hand out to Rey.

Does Rey fall to the dark and Kylo Ren go over to the light side?

Or is this a scene of him luring her into the dark, ending in the worst possible outcome with both of them going to the dark side? Episode VIII cannot come soon enough.

The film is out!!!

The post on the film itself is here!!
