[Predictions] Mission: Impossible 6 / Fallout [Analysis]

This time I’m writing up predictions and analysis for Fallout, the sixth Mission: Impossible film, out 3 August 2018 — all of it based on the trailer!

The music
What plays over the trailer is the Mission: Impossible theme everyone knows, plus “Friction” by Imagine Dragons.
And I’ve loved that track for ages!
It started when it was used in NCIS season 12, episode 23, and I thought, what an unbelievably cool song!
That episode was a story about going up against Islamist terrorists. The final scene in particular has the enemy revealing a huge plan, and one of the team works it out and gets the civilians evacuated, only to be killed doing it — and that’s where this song plays.
The intro is a light, rhythmic sound that brings the Middle East to mind, and around that spine the track builds and builds — exactly right for that show’s climax.

I never imagined it would turn up in Mission: Impossible lol
And it blends beautifully with the Mission: Impossible theme — a superb arrangement!
Music and footage line up perfectly, so as a trailer it’s seriously high quality.
What the title means
About that title, Fallout — I think it’s doing double duty as both “Fallout” and “Fall out.”

The trailer showed it as well — it looks like they get dragged into an incident involving nuclear weapons, and I think “Fallout” is pointing at that.
Apparently this film also digs deep into the hero, Ethan Hunt.
Things like why he keeps cooperating even though the government has deceived him again and again.
And that’s where the “Fall Out” in the title comes into its own, I reckon.

Character introductions first.
Ethan Hunt
A legendary veteran agent of the IMF.
Tom Cruise, who plays him, picked up serious injuries during shooting, a broken bone among them. Expecting that all-in, throw-yourself-at-it performance again this time.
Solomon Lane
Boss of the Syndicate, the enemy organisation from the previous film. A former MI6 spy. The villain of this one. He leads the Syndicate, a mysterious international criminal organisation, and secretly stages assassination after assassination all over the world. In truth he is a first-rate former MI6 spy: Atlee entrusted him with carrying out the “Syndicate project,” and he pulled a number of spies from around the world under his own hand, but he came to agonise over what justice actually was and betrayed his country. Ethan sums that up as “after agonising over whether he was really doing the right thing, he came to believe the country and the system were the problem, and decided to smash them.” He deliberately kept Ethan alive, wanting a spy that good as one of his own pieces, but between Ilsa’s and Atlee’s own agendas his plan gets knocked off course. In the end, with Ethan and Ilsa’s counterattack costing him subordinate after subordinate, he judged that leaving it to his men was no longer possible and came at Ethan with a gun in his own hand — only for the man who had once taken Ethan alive to end up being taken alive himself. He may be at odds with his former superior Atlee now, but just like Atlee he has no hesitation about cutting loose a subordinate who fails him. When Ilsa, whose standing had suffered after the blunder of letting Ethan get away, volunteered to assassinate the Austrian Chancellor, he moved with total thoroughness — anticipating she would fail, he lined up another assassin and an executioner for her in case she did. And when she came back to the hideout having failed to deal the Chancellor a fatal wound herself and handed him a pistol with “you can shoot me,” he shot dead the subordinate who had just tried to restrain her and been brushed off instead, as if to say he has no use for a man who is even less use than a failure.
Ilsa Faust
A female spy among the Syndicate’s members. A mysterious beauty who saves the captured Ethan and yet stays put inside the Syndicate herself, covering her tracks with deception even as her own position turns against her. She excels physically and mentally, and there are also scenes showing how well versed she is in truth serums. In reality she is a spy attached to MI6, deep undercover in the Syndicate and tracking Lane’s activities. She wants the mission finished and her job at MI6 back, but she is kept at the mercy of Atlee, her superior, and of Lane. Thanks to Atlee’s scheming, the number of people even inside MI6 who know she belongs to MI6 is as close to zero as it gets, and in the information Ethan and the others obtain she is down as “a former spy struck off MI6’s books.”
Alan Hunley
Director of the CIA, then Director of the IMF (final scene). The man who proposed disbanding the IMF in the first place. He takes the view that the Syndicate does not exist, and puts Ethan on an international wanted list for failing to follow orders. Later, when Ethan runs a bold operation against the British Prime Minister in order to save Benji, he makes his displeasure plain: “this puts relations between our country and Britain right back to the Revolutionary War.” But once the Syndicate’s existence comes to light, he grudgingly cooperates with Ethan and the others. At the special committee after the case is settled he presents it as having been secretly cooperating all along, and proposes bringing the IMF back. Once the committee is over Brandt welcomes him into the vacant post of IMF Director.
Benji Dunn and Luther Stickell
Benji Dunn
An IMF employee, an agent who used to handle gadget development. After the IMF is disbanded he becomes a CIA employee. Once transferred to the CIA he is stuck in the miserable position of being interrogated regularly by Hunley purely for having been close to Ethan, and with techniques picked up in his IMF days he gives false testimony about Ethan, “fooling” the polygraph and just about hanging on to his job and his income — though the stress of it had him sneaking games during work hours whenever nobody was looking. Ethan tricks him with a supposedly won ticket to the opera Turandot, invites him to Vienna, and ropes him into helping stop the Syndicate’s plan to assassinate the Austrian Chancellor. Afterwards Ethan, worried for his safety, urges him to go back to his old life, and he turns it down — “so I get interrogated all over again and keep on fooling the polygraph?” — and offers to help him instead. He did look terrified, though, when the Syndicate abducted him and when Lane rigged a bomb to him.
Simon Pegg, who plays him, is famous for things like Hot Fuzz! Love him!
Luther Stickell
An IMF employee who goes freelance once the IMF is disbanded. A genius hacker. He has been a long-standing collaborator and friend of Ethan’s ever since the business of the traitor hidden inside the IMF. After the IMF was disbanded he gave up on the organisation and worked freelance, which is why, despite having known Ethan far longer than Benji has, he was spared becoming one of those “regulars in the interrogation room” the way Benji did. He takes on Brandt’s request and goes looking for Ethan in order to help him, but he isn’t especially close to Brandt, and because Brandt stands so near to Hunley he nails him down with “Ethan is a friend. You are not. If you betray him, I’ll kill you.” Then he works alongside Brandt and joins up with Ethan in Morocco. In the opening he is off in Malaysia on a different assignment, yet still pulls the outrageous move of breaking into a satellite link to back up Ethan and Benji, who are mid-mission outside Minsk. In the second half, though, fieldwork not being his speciality works against him, and he makes the mistake of letting Ilsa slip away in an instant with her standing right in front of him (she was in such a precarious position that one odd move would have the Syndicate seriously coming for her life, so she could not afford to be caught by Luther).
Julia
Ethan’s wife. She is supposed to have been killed in Croatia by a Serbian organisation targeting Ethan, but in fact she is in witness protection and living as a different person now. Which is why she and Ethan are apart. Luther is at her side these days as her protection.
See what I’m getting at…
What all that shows is that a startling number of characters from the previous films are turning up in this one.
On top of that there’s
- who Ethan really is
- the reunion with Julia, the wife he separated from
- the return of the boss of the wiped-out Syndicate
and so on — all of which shows this is a film tied tightly to the earlier ones.
So doing the homework and watching at least Ghost Protocol and Rogue Nation first is absolutely the way to go, I think!
Jeremy Renner, who plays William Brandt and has been going strong as Ethan’s partner, isn’t in this one…
