[Spider-Man Spin-off] Venom [Predictions & Analysis]

Today it’s Venom — predictions and theories, pulled straight out of the trailers.

Who is Venom?

Venom is Spider-Man’s arch-enemy, and this is his second time in live action.

Last time it was the Sam Raimi version.

Loads of villains, lovely visuals, and I like the way it pulls the whole story together — a real favourite of mine.

In the comics too the man who transforms is Eddie Brock, the same as in the films.

As for what Venom actually is — that black suit is alive. It goes by the name of the symbiote.

An alien something like a fungus. It powers up on negative energy, malice and the rest of it, and it eats away at the mind of whoever it transforms as well.

The suit is alive, which is why it says things like this — “we are Venom.”

This Eddie Brock only hates Peter Parker, meaning Spider-Man, so the rest of the time he works as an anti-hero.

And when something far bigger and nastier shows up, he apparently even joins forces with Spider-Man and fights alongside him.

The villain is Carnage

Going by what’s already out there, the main villain of this film looks to be Carnage, on screen for the very first time!

Overview

A vicious villain, and a traumatic presence for Spider-Man.
A child born from Venom’s symbiote took possession of the serial killer Cletus Kasady and became a brutal symbiote with a taste for slaughter.
A villain, but popular enough that solo titles, mostly miniseries, have never stopped being published.

Powers

Venom copied Spider-Man’s abilities, and Carnage inherited those in turn, ending up stronger than both of them in every respect.
He has in fact taken on Spider-Man and Venom at the same time and overwhelmed them both.

Superhuman strength, speed, stamina, healing and durability.

He can stretch his cells out like threads from any part of his body and use them the way Spider-Man uses his webbing.
He can stick to walls.
He can sense danger the way spider-sense does, and conversely Spider-Man cannot sense him.

Shapeshifting.
He controls the symbiote’s colour, shape and hardness at will, turning it into ordinary clothing or blending into his surroundings as camouflage.
And, in an ability Venom does not have, he can turn parts of his cells into solid weapons — spears, axes, knives.

By winding his cells around an opponent’s head like plant vines, he can pour his own thoughts into them.
In the 2010 series “Carnage” he also bonded with an artificial enhancement suit, produced wings and gained the ability to fly.

Origin and history

Kasady was cruel from childhood. He pushed his grandmother down the stairs and killed her, and he tortured his mother’s dog and then killed it.
What he picked up at the orphanage was a philosophy: that life is meaningless and wasted, that law is nothing but words, and that the ultimate freedom is chaotic, random bloodshed spreading outward.

Meeting the symbiote

Kasady eventually became a serial killer and was put in the same cell as Eddie Brock, who was living in symbiosis with the Venom symbiote.

Eddie broke out of the prison using Venom’s power, and in doing so left a child of the symbiote behind without knowing it. It bonded with the blood inside Kasady’s body, entered a symbiotic state, and became Carnage.

Spider-Man found Carnage but could not lay a finger on him, and only just managed to take him down by teaming up with Venom. The symbiote survived inside Kasady’s blood, though.

Clear enough from all that — this is a character hyper-specialised in cruelty and raw offence.

Unlike Spider-Man or Venom, he can also reshape the symbiote coming off his body into weapons like axes and fire them off. That’s his signature.

In the comics it takes Spider-Man and Venom working together to beat him, so how on earth is this film going to handle it…

The connection to the MCU

Under Sony. Will it join the MCU?

The thing is, the live-action film rights to Spider-Man are not owned by Marvel. Sony holds them.

Which is why the original plan was a cinematic universe of Sony’s own, sitting outside the MCU.

But things seem to have shifted a little.

Maybe the Fox acquisition, or the success of Spider-Man inside the MCU, had something to do with it. More on that here

So the trailer for this film does put up a card saying, in effect, in association with Marvel.

On top of that — nothing has been stated outright — several of the people making it have hinted that the MCU’s Spider-Man might show up.

Personally I want Venom tangled up with the Avengers, so hopes are high.

Flash Thompson

In the comics Flash Thompson is a classmate of Spider-Man — of Peter Parker, that is.

He was a bully, the two of them made up later, and then he went off to serve in the military and lost both his legs.

But he takes part in a government experiment, becomes Venom’s host, and through sheer force of will and a sense of justice turns into the hero Agent Venom.
