Today I’m reviewing the famous Indian film 3 Idiots!
Farhan and Raju, best friends back in their university days, are called back to their old college one day by Chatur, a classmate from the same year. Chatur tells the two of them that he has traced the whereabouts of a former fellow student named Rancho, and proposes that they go and find him.
Ten years earlier, at ICE (the Imperial College of Engineering), one of the toughest engineering universities in India. Farhan and Raju, who each arrived carrying the expectations of their families, and the free-spirited genius Rancho become roommates in the dorm. The three do everything together and often kick up a racket, and the dean and the star student Chatur and the rest treat them as enemies, calling them the “3 idiots”.
The story interweaves episodes from the university ten years ago with the present-day journey of the three of them looking for Rancho, and in time closes in on a secret about him that not even Farhan and the others knew.

I think the video above makes it clear, but the story moves along with university life at its core, so I’d recommend it to university students!!
My image of Indian cinema used to be nothing but “lots of songs”, but after finishing this one and Baahubali and PK, that image changed.
There are a lot of songs, that much is true, but they were a device for carrying the story forward where that was needed, or for expressing what the characters are feeling.
On top of that, this one has students at the top science and engineering university in India as its protagonists, and yet the logical side and the emotional side are held in an exquisite balance.
No wonder it gets rave reviews all over the world~, is what I thought lol
The way the story is put together is interesting as well. Early on in the story, Farhan and Raju, best friends back in their university days, are called back to their old college one day by their classmate Chatur, and Chatur tells the two of them that he has traced the whereabouts of a former fellow student named Rancho, and proposes that they go and find him.
After that it moves into the story of ten years ago, and the film gets going with the question of exactly what sort of person Rancho is as its focus, going back and forth between ten years ago and the present.
That’s Rancho, the protagonist, and as becomes clear watching the film, the way he thinks is extremely distinctive and a lot of fun.
On top of that he’s a genius of invention, the sort of character who builds anything out of whatever happens to be lying around — a bit like “MacGyver”.
There are plenty of hints about him hidden throughout the story, and the way they all connect at once in the final stretch made for an extremely well-made piece of story construction.
India apparently has social problems such as suicide and poverty, and the film dealt with those as well.
Japan has similar problems, so I found it easy to relate to.
