[Thoughts] mother! [Review]

Hello!

This time I thought I’d review mother!!!

Story

A couple living a quiet life on the outskirts of town are visited by a mysterious man. The wife is suspicious of him, but the husband welcomes him in warmly. From that day on, visitor after visitor starts arriving at the house. The husband refuses to take his wife’s warning — that if this carries on something terrible is going to happen — at all seriously, and before long her fears turn real.

In short: a husband and wife are living quietly, and yet more and more strangers keep turning up, and the whole thing just feels scary. That’s the film.

Review

Opinion is split right down the middle

Critics were violently divided over the film, while audiences savaged it, giving it an F on CinemaScore — the lowest grade there is. The last film handed an F was Killing Them Softly, released in 2012.

Director Darren Aronofsky has said, “this film wasn’t made for a general audience; it was made for a particular group of people.”

On Rotten Tomatoes, 84% of 25 critic reviews were positive, with an average rating of 8.2 out of 10.

On Metacritic, based on 12 critic reviews, the average score was 8.3 out of 10.

The Japanese release was cancelled outright by the distributor, Paramount.

Opinion out there is split, as above, and I don’t think this is one to recommend to everybody either.

The reason isn’t the blood and gore — there is some, but it never goes that far. The real problem is the ethically extreme scenes. Nothing sexual, but the first watch was a genuine shock lol

So what is this film?

I think director Darren Aronofsky is right when he says “this film wasn’t made for a general audience; it was made for a particular group of people.”

Plenty of reviews say it is built on the Bible, that the woman at the centre of it represents “the Earth”, and that the theme is environmental destruction.

That reading feels right. But there was also the same shock here as watching Brad Pitt’s Fight Club for the first time.

What is that, exactly? It just landed like a punch! Something that leaves you fired up and full of energy, or makes you “notice” something. That sort of thing lol

It genuinely isn’t for everyone. But I want people to watch it and feel something — that was the kind of film it was.
