[Introduction] Stranger Things [Sci-Fi Thriller]

Hello!!

This time I thought I’d introduce this series made by Netflix.

Story

Set in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana in the 1980s, where strange events happen one after another near a laboratory researching supernatural phenomena and psychic powers. A group of boys and a mysterious girl with psychic powers fight an evil monster.

Terrifying experiments the government is running in secret, one supernatural event after another: what is the truth hidden behind it all? An homage to 1980s sci-fi cinema, starring Winona Ryder. The Netflix original series Stranger Things, streaming exclusively from 15 July.

Impressions & review

Not many episodes!

As of April 2018 it’s aired through season 2, and both seasons run to 8 episodes, so I think even people who reckon “American shows have too many episodes, I’ll never get through them” will find this one easy to get into.

The pacing is good

This ties into the short episode count, but the pacing is ridiculously good! Which is exactly why I end up bingeing the whole thing lol

Horror

An unknown phenomenon breaks out in a rural town, and the boys who live there, their families and the chief of police start investigating it — and the way that phenomenon is staged is seriously terrifying lol

It isn’t blood spraying everywhere, so there’s nothing to be alarmed about there. It’s more the feeling of something you can’t put a name to.

On the other hand, seeing the boys giving it absolutely everything keeps it from ever turning bleak, so the balance between the horror and the friendship sits just right — it’s sci-fi horror, and yet the impression I got from this one was a bright one.

It feels like Guardians of the Galaxy

It’s set in the 1980s, and it’s only a vague impression, but the pop songs playing through it and the furniture and the toys all feel a bit Guardians of the Galaxy.

America in the 70s and 80s really does have a culture all of its own, and it’s a joy, isn’t it lol

You can watch this show on Netflix, and on top of that it has the best library of series, films and animation in the world, for ¥1,000 a month — so I seriously recommend it!
