Hello!

Today let me introduce a film I love enough to call my number one!

It depicts people castrated and drained of the will to live by an advanced consumer society that whips up the appetite to consume and vanity; against that, young men flailing to win back their masculinity and their machismo by beating each other up; and the process by which that fighting tumbles down into self-annihilation and a taste for terrorism that would bring civilised society crashing down.

Impressions & review

Not the film I thought it was!

The gap between what I’d pictured going in and the real thing was a shock! lol

Going in I had it down as a hot-blooded action film about Brad Pitt clawing his way up through an illegal underground fighting pit. What it actually is: Tyler Durden, played by Brad Pitt, builds an organisation called Fight Club out of men who are fed up with modern society, the Narrator played by Edward Norton gets dragged into it, and from there the film follows that organisation turning more and more extremist.

Violent, but it has something to say!

It’s a seriously violent film, inwardly as much as outwardly!

But once it was over there was a sense that something in my own values had shifted. Like cracking out of a shell, maybe?

The rules of Fight Club are good fun too.

  1. You do not talk about Fight Club
  2. You do not talk about Fight Club
  3. If your opponent declares “I give up”, or passes out — even if they’re faking it — the fight is over at that point
  4. Fights are one on one
  5. One fight at a time
  6. Shirts off, shoes off
  7. No time limit on a fight
  8. Anyone at Fight Club for the first time has to fight

Want to say these out loud lol

Rules 1 and 2 saying the same thing means it matters that much.

Durden, the man who built Fight Club, doesn’t act on violence alone. He acts according to reason, exactly as those rules show, and there’s an unplaceable dread in that which makes him fascinating.

A cult following

It has a cult following all over the world.

Some of the criticism calls it violent, or says it incites terrorism, but there are voices calling it a magnificent film too.

More recently I get the feeling mother! has a similar effect on the people who watch it.

[Thoughts] mother! [Review]
