It’s one of the most-watched drama series on Netflix in 2017.
The lead is Clay Jensen, played by Dylan Minnette.

As I said in the synopsis, the story starts two weeks after Hannah takes her own life.
That’s right. She is already dead. Remarkable, isn’t it.
And so, two weeks after her death, a set of cassette tapes arrives at the protagonist’s door.
The tapes were made by Hannah before she took her own life.
There are thirteen of them, and each tape talks about one person.

This one… hmm.
Every episode uncovers more of the classmates’ secrets, those secrets turn out to be closely tangled together, and in the end they become the reasons Hannah takes her own life — so in the way the story unfolds, yes, you can call it a mystery.
But the characters are extremely real, and that goes for the lead Clay too.
In your standard high-school story you can tell at a glance who’s the nerd and who’s on the football team, everyone’s standing and group clearly marked out, but live it for real and friends change as time passes, and groups change too, don’t they.
That whole web of relationships overlaps with my own school days far too closely.
On top of that the personalities feel like people who could be anywhere, and I fell into that “ah, there was someone exactly like this” feeling over and over.
So the immersion is unreal
It’s a show that makes you think that maybe you might have been living a school life like this one yourself.
This is fiction that deals with real problems in society, and it takes on subjects including sexual assault, drug abuse and suicide.
So the show says up front that anyone who finds it painful to watch should stop, and that anyone struggling with something right now can ask for help at the site below.
What watching it left me with is that bullying becomes bullying from the moment the other person feels they are being bullied. That landed on me very hard.
Honestly, it left me low for days afterwards, but it also became a genuinely valuable chance to think about how my own words and actions come across to the other person, and how they make that person feel.
So right now, this is the show I most want people to watch.
