[Predictions] Black Panther [Trailer Analysis]
Hello! So much news came out of Comic-Con!!! Ahhh, absolutely buzzing right now!!
This time it’s everything the MCU’s Black Panther trailer tells us!!
*Warning:
This is predictions and analysis, so there are spoilers for the MCU so far as well.

The write-up on the actual film, posted after release, is here
Here’s the trailer.
Going to work through it with analysis and predictions.

It opens with Everett K. Ross interrogating Ulysses Klaue.
Klaue has been around since Avengers: Age of Ultron.
He’s the main villain this time.
Below is the comics version.

He’s missing an arm in the comics too.
The difference is that in live action it’s the left arm that’s been taken off.
And in the comics he’s apparently the man who killed the previous king of Wakanda — the father of this film’s hero.
In the films that king was killed by somebody else.
Next up, Ross.
Played by the very famous Martin Freeman!!!

A seriously well-known actor — the TV series Sherlock, the film Hot Fuzz and plenty more.
And he’s famously one half of a double act with Cumberbatch from Doctor Strange.
Both of them are in the MCU now, so bring on that reunion as soon as possible.
In the comics he looks like this.

Looks like he’s a well-known supporting player in Black Panther.

T’Challa wading into a spring.
The Black Panther mantle is something the kings of Wakanda have handed down through the generations.
In the comics the source of that power is a “herb”, but perhaps because that brings drugs to mind, the film looks like it’s making the spring the source instead.

After Civil War, T’Challa formally becomes king, and this is how his people welcome him.

Black Panther, bullets bouncing straight off him.
Klaue seems to have broken into Wakanda at some point in the past and been driven back out.
Lining the timeline up: Klaue is in custody, so this comes after Age of Ultron. And T’Challa is king, so it’s after Civil War as well. Which means a fair amount of time has passed since he became the Black Panther.
Although the one who drove Klaue off might well have been the previous king lol

T’Challa and the others watching the interrogation.

You can see Wakanda is a properly futuristic city.
There was a quick glimpse of it at the end of Civil War too.
But it’s an extremely closed-off nation, so none of this is known to the outside world.

This shaman is apparently called Zuri, and he’s an aide to the king.

A mystery figure in a triceratops-style mask, breaking Klaue out.
One of this film’s villains.

A mystery attack breaking out in a casino.
No way to work out what that is from this alone lol

T’Challa pulling the mask off, looking pleased with himself.
Maybe he’s just finished the ritual to become the Black Panther?

Klaue looks like he’s raiding a museum somewhere.
In Age of Ultron Klaue was sitting on a huge stock of vibranium.
Wakanda is where vibranium comes from, so maybe collecting the stuff is Klaue’s whole objective.
Is that why he’s hitting Wakanda this time?
Marvel films always land way beyond what anyone predicts, so there’s probably another motive hidden in there.

A United Nations scene, maybe?

An iceberg?
And who are these people?

Somebody important, by the look of him.
Wakanda has a number of tribes, and he seems to be the chief of the largest one.

Looks like a group heading into some kind of ruins?
Going after the ancient treasures of Wakanda, Indiana Jones style?

This is the man who was wearing that triceratops mask earlier.
Word is he’s a character called Erik Killmonger, and he’s the main villain of the film.

The comics version looks like the above.
He and T’Challa are rivals.

Looks like an attack out of nowhere.

The one shouting here is a character called Man-Ape, and he looks like villain number three.
In the comics he apparently gained superhuman power by eating the flesh of a white gorilla like the one below.

She’s called Shuri, and she looks like a scientist who knows vibranium inside out.

A car chase with real weight to it!!
Somebody is coming after Black Panther!
Now, this purple light.
One look and it clicked — that’s the same weapon that turned up in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Spider-Man: Homecoming
Only a guess, mind.
That weapon was built by the main villain, Vulture, out of alien technology.
And in the comics Klaue has rebuilt his missing arm into a weapon.
https://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/marveldatabase/images/1/10/Ulysses_Klaw_%28Earth-616%29_from_Superior_Carnage_Vol_1_1_001.jpg/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/650?cb=20130718233151
So the prediction here is that Klaue uses alien technology to convert that arm into a blaster.
The MCU started out close to reality, and with every film it drifts further into science fiction while the people of Earth get tougher and tougher. Really fun to watch that happen!
On top of that!!!
A new poster dropped as well!!!
So coooooool!!!!
Also the track in this trailer is “Legend Has It” by Run the Jewels.
Far too stylish!!!
Expectations sky high!!
Looks like it’ll be loaded with hip hop and R&B, which could make it a second Guardians of the Galaxy. Cannot wait!!!
Last thing, on Winter Soldier and Captain America appearing — apparently neither of them is in this one.
Looks like that gets settled in Infinity War.
Posters for that are out now too, and honestly just as excited for it!!!
