[MCU Analysis & Review] What If…? Episode 9 [Impressions & Easter Eggs]
Today it’s What If…? episode 9, the MCU show that dropped on Wednesday 4 October — the points worth flagging, the analysis and review, and predictions for where all of this goes next.
Quick notes on everything that caught my eye on the first watch, the Easter eggs, and the theories after that.

What I’ve been into lately
Started shooting all sorts of things for fun recently. Camera is a ZV-1, shooting RAW and editing in Lightroom.
This time it was Chichibu.
Episode 9, “What If… The Watcher Broke His Oath?”
The branching choice
This week it was the “what if… the Watcher broke his oath…?” that happened back in episode 8!
Each of the Guardians
Agent Carter
In timeline terms this was the Carter from The Winter Soldier!
Interestingly, Carter knew about Black Widow’s parents! Seems the two of them are the closest of friends.
Her still loving Steve after all this time — lovely.
T’Challa
Sure enough, after that, Peter Quill was being used in an attempt to turn the whole universe into a single being. Going by the end of episode 9, though, it looks like that gets sorted out.
Gamora
Gamora turns up after all!! No idea what sort of world hers is or how it came about, but the Watcher telling Gamora she “survived the planet Sakaar and defeated Thanos” looks like some kind of hint.
Killmonger
Sure enough, after the end of that story word got out to everyone that Killmonger was the villain, and Shuri and Pepper were trying to catch him. Why did the Watcher pick Killmonger?! is what I kept thinking while watching — but presumably he read ahead to Killmonger being sealed away, the way it goes at the end here, and called him in for that?
Party Thor
This one picks up from episode 7 as well — he was right in the middle of taking down the Ultron who came to invade Thor’s world!
Doctor Strange
Doctor Strange was everywhere this time, conjuring up magical armour and more! Cancelling out the super slow-motion with his own Time Stone, and rewinding when the galaxy was about to be destroyed — both very cool.
Black Widow
Following on from episode 8, Black Widow ended up the only survivor in the universe, but she pulled off the Arnim Zola virus plan beautifully!
Beer
Of course, Doctor Strange and Thor together means beer, exactly like in Thor: Ragnarok!!
Guardians of the Multiverse
I was sure this group would get an Avengers-style name or something along those lines, but no — the Guardians of the Multiverse! Feels like they’ll be getting back together in season 2!
How it ends
Killmonger betrayed them after all lol The slightly odd bit is that the Mind Stone in the head couldn’t be taken out, but never mind that now! And that final turn, sealed away with Doctor Strange Supreme keeping watch, feels like a return is on the cards later on — so good.
The post-credits scene
The HYDRA Stomper turns up at the very end!! But the one inside is presumably Steve, so does that mean decades of hibernation?? Want the rest of it in season 2 or in live action, and soon!!
After watching episode 9
How the Stones differ from universe to universe
The Infinity Stones having slightly different properties in each universe of the multiverse looks like it’ll matter a lot later on. Looking forward to how that gets handled once the multiverse shows up in live action.
Captain Carter comes back
It’s only at rumour level, but people are saying Captain Carter might appear in Doctor Strange 2! I’d like the characters who showed up in What If…? season 1 to turn up on the live-action side too, so — MCU, over to you please!!

What If…? has already been confirmed for a season 2! Can’t wait~~~
