Overall

A buddy story with Venom

Venom was so adorable! Eddie really should treat him with more respect lol Then again, being screamed at inside your own head around the clock… yeah, that’s fair. And things with the ex end up in a better place too, which is nice.

The villains, Carnage and Frances Barrison / Shriek, were great as well! Shriek being the one weakness both Venom and Carnage share could have been pushed a lot further, mind lol And it’s a shame there was never any real interaction with Detective Patrick Mulligan, the cop. Though Mulligan looks set to show up as Toxin later on.

The story moves at a terrific pace on top of that. And the eating-people problem is settled for now, maybe? Having to leave town in the end though — tough luck.

And above all, footage of the MCU Spider-Man turns up right at the end! That scene, and where all of this goes from here, gets covered in the analysis section of this post!

Carnage

Woody Harrelson as Cletus Kasady / Carnage was the best!! Not a moment’s hesitation about killing, and doing whatever he pleases purely to feed his own appetites — pure evil, and magnetic with it!

And Carnage’s powers are just as nasty as they are in the comics. Ranged attacks, of all things…

Carnage and Cletus both get eaten and die at the end, but a reality rewrite bringing them back feels entirely possible!

Also, the Hot Toys Carnage and Venom figures are ridiculously well made!! Pre-ordered, obviously! Want to display them squaring up to each other mid-fight!

The SSU scaling up

SSU is short for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe — Sony’s own take on the MCU! The Spider-Man side of things is set to expand through the SSU from here on. Morbius and Kraven the Hunter are apparently among the ones lined up!

And then the end of this film!! Venom’s world gets rewritten and the MCU Spider-Man appears on television!! On top of that, it’s the news report revealing Spider-Man’s identity as Peter Parker, so on the timeline this lands somewhere in the middle of Spider-Man: Far From Home!

Analysis / Easter eggs

Merging with the MCU

At the end of the film Venom’s world is rewritten and that Spider-Man news report shows up. The odds are very high that this is Doctor Strange’s mess from Spider-Man: No Way Home, and people are saying Venom could turn up as the sixth villain of No Way Home!

Personally, the guess is that at the end of No Way Home Peter chooses yet another reality rewrite, and that merges his world with Venom’s! A new trilogy is planned as well! Full details in the article below!

Toxin

Detective Patrick Mulligan’s eyes turn blue near the end! That’s a new hero called Toxin. In the comics, exactly as in the film, he is the character formed when a new symbiote born from Carnage bonds with Patrick. Patrick himself has a powerful sense of justice, though, so he ends up operating as a hero. The details are below.

Toxin is the name of a symbiote, a parasitic life form of extraterrestrial origin, and of the being it becomes when bonded with a human. Its character depends on the person it is bonded to, but it generally falls on the hero side. Its first host was the police officer Patrick Mulligan, who fought against the brutal impulses the symbiote carried and, driven by his own sense of justice, acted as a hero.

He might well show up in Venom 3, or Spider-Man 4, or somewhere down the line!
