[MCU Analysis & Review] Hawkeye Episode 5 [Thoughts & Easter Eggs]

The points worth flagging from episode 5 of the MCU series Hawkeye, which dropped on Wednesday 15 December, plus the analysis, the Easter eggs and where all of this goes next. In particular I’ll be writing about the Kingpin from the Netflix Daredevil turning up, the Statue of Liberty link to Spider-Man, and Kate’s mother Eleanor!

This post runs briefly through the things that caught my eye on a first viewing and the Easter eggs, and then gets into the analysis.

A recent hobby

I’ve started shooting all sorts of things for fun lately. The camera is a ZV-1 — shoot in RAW, edit in Lightroom, that kind of thing.

What I shot this time was the Hideaki Anno Exhibition.

Episode 5: Ronin

Yelena was snapped away

Even though she’d patched things up with her sister Natasha, the snap went and took five precious years off her — rough on her. What I want to know is what she was doing for the two years or so since Endgame ended? Did she not know the circumstances of Natasha’s death, hear about them from Val, and come to resent Clint?

Jack’s arrest

Jack went and got himself arrested lol

As everyone knows, this is Eleanor’s doing. But with no marriage yet, he shouldn’t be able to inherit the estate… The reason for the frame-up isn’t all that clear. A bit too hasty, surely…

Probably in the post-credits of episode 6 or somewhere like it, he’ll reveal himself as Swordsman and it’ll go To Be Continued

Ronin

Clint finally hauls himself up to stop Maya! And the scene where he apologises to Natasha was lovely.

On the business with Maya’s uncle

I completely missed this one… Sure enough, to set up the Kingpin vs Echo (Maya) shape of things, the one who had the uncle killed was always going to be Kingpin. Well, that floored me. This thread probably doesn’t get resolved in this show — it carries on into the Echo series.

The comic touches

When Kate heads home by car, the way it looks like she just booked an Uber made me laugh. That very modern-kid touch is adorable. And the way she’s a fourth-year university student and still fires off question after question at the Hawkeye she idolises — that bit of ditziness is adorable too.

Kingpin!!!

Kingpin turns up after all!!!!

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAH!!!!!!!! Insane!! Way too insane!!!!! So the Netflix cast are going to keep piling in like this!!!!! Man, this is too hot!!!!

And the theory that the mother, Eleanor, is the one behind it all is confirmed right here. The show probably ends with the business with the mother settled.

In the previous episode, after Clint and Eleanor spoke, Eleanor was talking to someone — and just as predicted, it looks like it was Val or Kingpin.

Also, the scene below from episode 3 really was blatant setup after all! The MCU giving exactly the turn I was hoping for — the best, as always!

Having finished episode 5

The Spider-Man connection

In the scene above, Kate says the new Statue of Liberty! That must surely be because the Statue of Liberty gets broken in Spider-Man: No Way Home, or because Captain America’s shield gets fitted to it!!!

Daredevil

Daredevil Poster

I don’t know whether it’s the same person this time, but the Netflix Kingpin has turned up! There are rumours of Matthew “Matt” Murdock appearing in Spider-Man: No Way Home too, so how about taking this as a chance to give the Netflix Daredevil a watch??

The Echo series

In the Echo series I’d love Echo (Maya) and Daredevil to stand up to Kingpin together!

And I’d love Iron Fist to show up as well, tied in with Shang-Chi!

Where it goes from here

The threads left hanging in Hawkeye look to be these.

• How Jack (Swordsman) gets drawn in → probably the post-credits scene of episode 6 hints that he’ll be getting more and more involved from here

• Who the killer is (I’m backing the mother theory) → Hawkeye probably ends with the mother arrested. And the Tracksuit Mafia stop going after Clint once Maya changes course

• Clint’s atonement → no idea

• How Echo comes to forgive (she has her own series, so she surely can’t end as nothing but a creature of revenge) → switching the revenge over to Kingpin?

• Settling things with Natasha’s sister Yelena → she looks surprisingly likely to let it go

• The mystery of the watch (my prediction: something to do with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.)

One episode left! Really curious how the finale goes!
